UPSC Indian Forest Services Examination 2025 - UPSC IFS 2025 - Eligibility - Salary - Exam Pattern

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released notification for recruitment of All India Services (AIS) Officers in Indian Forest Services (IFoS) 2026 Batch. Here in this blog, I have explained all the necessary details related to this recruitment notification.

VACANCY:
A total of 150 vacancies have been notified.

WHAT IS ALL INDIA SERVICE (AIS)?
In this service, you are allocated a cadre, and work for the state government (though being a central government employee).
The following services come under All India Services:
(i) Indian Administrative Service (IAS) (through CSE)
(ii) Indian Police Service (IPS) (through CSE)
(iii) Indian Forest Services (IFoS) (through IFS exam)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
• Application for both CSE and IFS Prelims is the same.
• If you want to give only CSE, choose only CSE.
• If you want to give only IFS, choose only IFS.
• If you want to give both CSE and IFS, choose Both.
• Whatever you choose (either of them/both), you'll have to pay the same application fees.
• And the attempt for CSE and IFS will be counted separately. Even if you have exhausted your attempts of CSE, you can apply for IFS, and vice-versa.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION:
(i) Bachelor's degree with at least one of the subjects namely Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology; OR,
(ii) Bachelor's degree in Agriculture; OR,
(iii) Bachelor's degree in Forestry; OR,
(iv) Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (BE/BTech) in any branch.

NOTE: Final year/appearing students are also eligible to apply, but they will have to provide the details of passing the examination in Detailed Application Form (DAF) before Mains Stage.

AGE LIMIT (as on 01/08/2025):
• Minimum:
21 years
• Maximum: 32 years
• Age relaxation in the Upper Age Limit will be provided to:
(i) OBC-NCL: 03 years
(ii) SC/ST: 05 years
(iii) Physically Handicapped: 10 years
(iv) Defence Services Personnel, disabled in operations during hostilities: 03 years
(v) Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and Emergency Commissioned Officers (ECOs)/Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSCOs) who have rendered at least five years Military Service: 05 years

ATTEMPT LIMIT:
The maximum number of attempts allowed for different categories are as follows:
(i) UR/EWS: 06 attempts
(ii) OBC-NCL: 09 attempts
(iii) SC/ST: Unlimited Attempts
(iv) PwBD (UR/EWS/OBC-NCL): 09 Attempts
(v) PwBD (SC/ST): Unlimited Attempts

HOW AN ATTEMPT IS COUNTED?
• If you apply for the exam, and don't appear in any of the papers in Prelims, your attempt won't be counted.
• If you appear in any one of the papers, and sign the attendance sheet in Prelims, your attempt will be counted.
• Even if you give only one paper and leave the second paper, your attempt will still be counted.
• Even if your candidature is cancelled, and you have appeared in any one paper of prelims, your attempt will still be counted.

SALARY:
• Pay Level: level-10
• Pay Band: 15600-39100
• Grade Pay: 5400
• Basic Pay: ₹56,100
• Dearness Allowance: 53%
• House Rent Allowance: 30% (for X-city)
• Travelling Allowance: ₹7200 + DA (53%)
• Deductions: NPS, Income Tax, Professional Tax, etc.
• Gross Salary: ₹1,15,000 approx.
• NET (In-hand) Salary: ₹98,250 approx.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Selection to all the services will be done in three stages:
A. Preliminary Examination
B. Main Examination
C. Personality Test/Interview

A. PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION:
• It is only for shortlisting candidates for the Mains Exam.
• This paper is same for both CSE and IFS.
• It will not be counted for making the merit list for service allotment.
• In Prelims, there will be two papers:
(i) General Studies (GS) Paper-I: It will consist questions from General Awareness and Current Affairs. It will be of 200 marks.
(ii) General Studies (GS) Paper-II: It will consist of questions from English, Mathematics and Reasoning. It will be of 200 marks.
• GS Paper-II will be qualifying in nature. You just have to score a minimum of 33% (66 marks) to qualify it.
• Shortlisting for Mains Exam will be done on the basis of marks scored in GS Paper-I only.
• Qualifying GS Paper-II is very important. Without qualifying it, you can't be shortlisted for Mains (no matter how good you perform in Paper-I).
• Roughly around 10-12 times candidates are shortlisted for the Main Exam (Category wise).

B. MAIN EXAMINATION:
• After qualifying the Prelims Exam, CSE and IFS have separate Main Exams.
• In IFS Main Exam, there will be six papers:
1. Paper-I: General English: 300 marks
2. Paper-II: General Knowledge: 300 marks
3. Paper-III: Optional Subject-I (Paper-1): 200 marks
4. Paper-IV: Optional Subject-I (Paper-2): 200 marks
5. Paper-V: Optional Subject-II (Paper-1): 200 marks
6. Paper-VI: Optional Subject-II (Paper-2): 200 marks
• TOTAL: 1400 marks
• Duration of each paper: 3 hours
• Candidates have to choose any two optional subjects from the following:
(i) Agriculture
(ii) Agricultural Engineering
(iii) Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
(iv) Botany
(v) Chemistry
(vi) Chemical Engineering
(vii) Civil Engineering
(viii) Forestry
(ix) Geology
(x) Mathematics
(xi) Mechanical Engineering
(xii) Physics
(xiii) Statistics
(xiv) Zoology
• Candidates will not be allowed to offer the following combination of subjects:
(a) Agriculture and Agricultural Engg.
(b) Agriculture and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science.
(c) Agriculture and Forestry.
(d) Chemistry and Chemical Engg.
(e) Mathematics and Statistics.
(f) Of the Engineering subjects viz. Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering - not more than one subject.

C. PERSONALITY TEST/INTERVIEW:
• Candidates who obtain minimum qualifying marks in Main Examination (as decided by UPSC), will be called for Personality Test/Interview.
• In this stage, your personality is tested, whether you are fit for the service or not.
• TOTAL Marks of Interview: 300 marks.

PHYSICAL TEST:
• A physical test will follow the interview.
• Here, male candidates have to complete a 25 km walk or run in under 4 hours, and female candidates have to complete a 14 km walk or run in less than 4 hours.
• It will be only qualifying in nature, but mandatory for final selection.

FINAL SELECTION:
Final Selection to the services will be done on the basis of the merit list prepared from Mains and Interview marks.
Total Marks (Final Merit) = Mains + Interview= 1400 + 300 = 1700 marks.
